'LADY POETS'

September the sixth: a sad day was dawning
As streets lined with people solemn with mourning
A brilliant star had gone from their lives
Sweethearts clasped hands, husbands held wives

People lit candles and murmered their prayers
Heartbreaking messages mingled with tears
A carpet of flowers spread like an ocean
Wafting sweet scent and stirring emotion

Then faces were frozen, hearts felt they'd stopped
As boots stepped in time, black horses clopped
In her flower-decked casket, on carriage-of-gun
Our sweet princess slept in the warmth of the sun

A solitary bell marked each minute that passed
On the palace swayed gently, a flag at half-mast
The simple procession passed by the crowd
Flowers were strewn, heads slowly bowed

We'll never forget those carriage wheels rolling
The sound of the sobs, the lonely bell tolling
The sight of her sons walking bravely behind
A scene that forever is etched in each mind

In Westminster Abbey they gathered and prayed
Celebrities, royals, providers of aid
Whatever their race, rank, class or creed
All became equal, expressing their need

To try and accept the loss of her magic
To come to terms with a death so tragic
That one of such beauty, kindness and love
Had passed beyond this world, to one up above

We all shared a grief, so sudden, so deep
No tears of regret can waken her sleep
But our sweet English Rose will never cease
She's been picked to bloom in a garden of peace
