My Poetry
'FIFTIES
CHILD'
Do you remember your childhood days?
Playtimes at school with the latest craze
Hoola-hoops, humming tops, yo-yos on strings
Let me remind you of some of the things
Jamboree Bags and Sweet Tobacco
Archie Andrews, Jimmy Edwards’ Whacko
Fresh Shrimps, Black Jacks, penny chews
Dolls-eye buttons on T-strap shoes
Wall-papered school books, toffee in trays
With little hammers to shatter the glaze
Gobstoppers, Acid Drops, Banana Split Toffee
Bread and dripping, and chickory coffee
Crepe-soled sandals, swimsuits with ‘blisters’
Crew-cut brothers, pony-tailed sisters
Boat-shaped prams with kiss-curled tots
Wooden beads that brightened their cots
Watch With Mother, Uncle Mac
Bill and Ben, and Crackerjack
Beano, Robin, Eagle, Girl
Friends called Wendy, Sue and Shirl’
Thick pea-soupers we called ‘smog’
Scarf muffled face when walking the dog
Hide-and-seek, feet-off-ground
Ready or not, you always got found!
Duffle coats, wellies, gaberdine macs
Clusters of girls playing fivestones or jacks
Metal-wheeled skates that made sparks fly
As gangs of boys clattered noisily by
That was the Fifties for you and me
A time of great change, I’m sure you’ll agree
With war at an end, and good times ahead
and BUTTER, not marge, to spread on our bread!
